To mark Halloween there are many public ghost hunts going on at the most notoriously haunted locations around the UK. This increasingly popular pastime has become fascinating and addictive to many of those that are looking for their own personal experience. Ghostly goings-on and things that go bump in the night are terrifying yet compelling. What is really remarkable is that the public will pay for the privilege of spending the whole night in the darkest of dungeons, or creepiest of castles.

Do ghosts really exist? Can spirits harm us? Will I see something? These are the most common questions asked at a ghost hunt event. Paranormal teams and Mediums suggest that they have the answers to these questions but do they really, and if so why are there so many different answers by so many different experts in the field? Surely there should be one universal agreement, they can hurt us or they can't. I have been on many ghost hunts where I have had a Medium explaining to us that spirits will not hurt us yet people have been scratched or poked during the night's vigils, making the whole debate very confusing.

Whatever is going on and whether spirits can hurt us or not, it does not seem to stop people from attempting to find out. Fortunately for ghost hunting companies many more locations are cashing in on the hiring out of their location for these events. It is not uncommon to be paying over one thousand pounds to hire a location for a few hours. This makes me wonder how they are selected in the first place. Yes, it could be agreed that to ghost hunt at an old manor house or castle is aesthetically pleasing and adds credence to the investigation, It may not necessarily mean that it is haunted. There has been so much paranormal activity in a small innocuous pub than what may have been experienced in the oldest and grandest of castles. However, this would be harder to sell as the public do seem to have a pre-conceived idea of what would be haunted and what does not look haunted.

It seems that due to the increasing popularity of ghost hunting and the public's fascination that there now seems to be a need to clarify whether an activity is actually entertaining if people are being terrified. Perhaps all public ghost hunting companies should have a responsibility to their paying customers and a duty of care to them for what may be experienced on their events. It is confusing, because what may be experienced on a ghost hunt could be very traumatic and life-changing for the customer yet it is done in the name of entertainment. This sounds quite worrying and whilst we may rely on the fact that ghost hunting companies will offer some sort of after-care service for their customers, how do we know that this is happening? You may agree that we all have a choice whether we partake in an activity or not, but as a novice how would you know what your reaction to such an experience may be?

It could be suggested that before anybody books a place on this unique and amazing experience, they think very carefully at how they may react to the abnormal situation they may find themselves in. How many times have you sat in a dark, cold and damp dungeon at 2am on your own and heard strange noises? What will you do if somebody touches you and you can't see them? Whilst you may crave the experience, it certainly does leave its mark on you for a long time to come.
